How to install cedar shingles on a shed roof.

Start installing roof shingles. In order to make your roof water tight and to eliminate wind infiltration first place tar on the bottom edge of the roof and lay a row of roofing shingles upside down all the way across the bottom of the roof. Protect your wood shed from the elements by installing roof shingles. Ensure the second shingle overhangs the edge of the roof by the same amount as the first shingle.

For this project you will need. Shingles keep water out in layers. This leaves room for the shingles to contract and expand. Cedar breather comes in 200 square foot rolls and should be installed over the roofing felt with nails or tacks.

Cedar breather creates a space between the cedar shingles and the roof. Attach the shingle to the roof with two nails driven in near its top edge. Put the next shingle about one eighth to one quarter of an inch away from the edge of the first shingle. Roofing shingles come in strips that are generally about 3 feet long and 8 or 10 inches wide.

This space allows the shingles to dry more quickly preventing warping and cupping prolonging the life of the shingles.
