How to make metal rust.
If you have a large flat pan that holds the corrugated metal put the vinegar and bleach solution into the pan and set the corrugated metal in the solution for a rusted effect on both sides of the corrugated tin.
For my project i needed a big piece so i purchased an 8ft tall by about 2 5ft wide sheet of corrugated roof panel at lowes.
But this technique works really well especially on galvanized metal roofing.
That will get the oxidization process started.
Instead of leaving the metal outside for years to age on its own speed up the process with vinegar or faux finish it with paint or glaze.
Snow is the best weathering agent around but rain works too.
If you prefer a rusty look use paints or glazes to add as much or as little as you like.
When it s the right amount of rustiness rinse it off and let it age out in the weather.
If the corrugated metal has a seal coat on it you need to remove that first with a stripper.
After burning the finish off spray or dip the item in a bath of bleach vinegar or salt water.
To make your new shiny metal appear old you can antique it with paint.
If you want to age galvanized metal just remember you won t be able to control every little inch.
There s a project we ve had in mind for our rv all we needed was some antique horseshoes.
It was about 10 for my sheet.
You can also tarnish it using corrosive materials such as acid cleaner vinegar and salt.
It may seem like a big project but all you need is some ordinary household products to make a metal object age several years in just a few hours or so.
